HISTORY

            On January 2nd, 1974 Prof. Dr. Kasadn Chatikavanij, President of Mahidol University appointed a committee to set up a Faculty Senate and on May 9th Mahidol University announced the regulations of the Faculty Senate.  On July 2nd, 1974  Assoc. Prof. Dr. Phuket Vajanon became its first president.

            The activities of senate were well managed for the first three years until the advent of administrative reformation (following the event of 6th October 1976).  On March 30th, 1977, the activities of Mahidol University Faculty Senate were temporarily halted due to the resolution of the 39th Mahidol University Council meeting.

            On May 12th, 1977, the Ministry of University Affairs sent letters to all universities in Thailand stating “Any universities which do not have Faculty Senates, should not set up one in the near future, but if any universities already have a Faculty Senate, it should be a consultant to the President.  The activities must be only internal affairs, and must not relate to external affairs, especially politics”.  For years, the Faculty Senate did not have any activities until the government imposing the administrative reformation stepped down.  The Lecturers’ Council was then assembled, and sent a request to the Mahidol University Council to abort the resolution of March 30th, 1977.  On March 13th, 1981, Mahidol University Council announced the new regulations about the Faculty Senate and they are still in use until today.

            The 1987 act of Mahidol University concerning the Faculty Senate, is shown below;
            “Section 22.  The faculty senate consists of members who are elected from full-time Mahidol University’s lecturers. The Faculty Senate’s role is to give advice and suggestions to the President of Mahidol University, and other duties assigned by the Mahidol University Council or the President of Mahidol University. The number of members, regulations, election process, and all operations of faculty of senate must follow the university’s regulations.”

            In 2008, Mahidol University Faculty Senate' Office play role as the autonomous sector of the University from its long history of being under the Division of General Affairs of  the President of Mahidol University.
